maui [and my love for photo books]

Hawaii….such an incredibly beautiful vacation destination! We made the long (but oh so worth it) trek to the island of Maui this past Christmas morning. It was the second time that Peter and I have “skipped” Christmas (while teaching abroad, we took advantage of being in Asia and vacationed in Boracay, Philippines, for the holiday break). Initially, the idea felt selfish and like we were somehow letting our family down by not being here for Christmas. In fact, both trips were amazing experiences and I would definitely do it again. This year, we were at home for the entire lead up to Christmas and spent lots of quality time before taking off for the warm breeze and sandy beaches of Hawaii. This was our first trip traveling with another couple, and it was so much fun!

I recently put together a photo book of our trip, using Blurb (a wonderful site allowing you to create and publish personal photo books). Blurb was suggested by my wedding photographer and I absolutely love the wedding and honeymoon books that I made last year. It is such a fabulous way to keep pictures together and have them available to show family and friends. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are some of my favourites from out trip!

(Vacation Pete)

(Poolside essentials, although by mid trip my friend had me reading her hand-me-down novels. She breezed through 1-2 books a day. No big deal.)

(Big Beach)

(The Grand Luau at Honua’ula – an okay one time experience, but not a highlight for me. The food was decent but I found the luau overrated.)

(The boys were very happy to take in the practice round of The Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Maui. The girls on the other hand, started off quite uninterested, then excited to get some autographs, before succumbing to feelings of  sunstroke.)

On Maui, we stayed in a perfect spot at the Wailea Grand Champions Resort that we found on Vacation Rental by Owner (VRBO) . It had 2 spacious bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, connected by a kitchen and living room. It was more than enough space! We had previously booked many great spots on Airbnb for other trips, and were just as satisfied using VRBO this time!

We loved lunches at Fred’s, happy hour at The Monkey Pod and the Fairmont Ama Bar and Grill, beach hopping and our cute (but not so effective on the hills) cruiser bikes from Boss Frog’s. It was so nice to slow down, relax and enjoy time outside by the ocean. The meandering days seemed to go on forever.

Have you been to Hawaii? I would love some recommendations! Should we return to Maui or plan to visit another island? Leave a comment and fill me in on the highlights of your trip! I definitely plan to visit Hawaii again some day!
