boyd pop up [our city out loud]

If you live in Saint John or the surrounding area, you have likely encountered the radiant and charismatic Zoë Boyd. Her smile brightens any room and her energy is contagious! I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Zoë on many occasions, and more recently worked with her on a  special project for Brent Rourke cabinetmaker.

Zoë is one of many talented individuals in her family, with a background in applied arts, and a keen eye for beautiful art. BOYD POP UP, her current ongoing project, originally started with the help of a family friend, Gerard Collins. She explained, “We began as BOYD & COLLINS, as it was only my dad, Jim Boyd, my brother, Angus, and Gerry Collins involved in the events.” As new artists joined, the name was changed to BOYD POP UP, encapsulating the open and inclusive nature of the events. Zoë continues, “I changed the name and became more serious about promoting the events. I hope to launch a website soon and currently sell work on Instagram and Facebook.” Be sure to follow along, @boydpopup!

Saint John is booming and built on an extremely supportive community of people. Zoë loves the flexibility that the pop up gallery provides both her and the artists she features. BOYD POP UP is receiving a great amount of support from local businesses and Zoë feels very grateful for the love she is receiving from everyone. “LORDON [women’s clothing boutique] has opened their doors and hosted a couple of mini pop ups featuring the pottery of my aunt, Stephanie Boyd, of Stephanie Boyd Works. Judith and her team at TUCK Studio have been very supportive in promoting our events and sending people to check out our POP UPs. Tim Isaac Antiques has always promoted my events at auctions and via email, along with providing sponsorship. We’ve also collaborated with Maritime Mercantile and are looking forward to future collaborations with Quality Block Party & Brent Rourke cabinetmaker,” says Boyd. Her goal is to help artists connect with a variety of people and to showcase their work to as wide an audience as possible.  This seems like such an amazing thing; promoting others to help them better themselves.

I myself, have had the pleasure of attending a BOYD POP UP, and the atmosphere at Zoë’s place at 12 Mecklenburg St. is bustling and lively. There is a very warm and welcoming vibe beyond the bright red door, with a buzz of happy people perusing her home full of the art work of many talented people. Mark your calendars and save the date for these upcoming events! The next BOYD POP UP will include live music, you don’t want to miss out!
